Is it more expensive to eat healthy?
I have always bought into eating healthy is more expensive. I realise this is a blatant lie.
When this idea is in your head, and fast food prices seem cheap, you will automatically buy cheap junk food which removes the inconvenience of cooking.
These days, we are all in a rush to live. Things need to move fast, and this means we don’t feel we have those extra few minutes it may take to prepare an inexpensive, healthy meal.
Calorie-dense foods fill us up for longer than a healthy meal, and this is one thing which makes junk food so appealing.
Then there is also storage of certain foods at home. This is especially important to me because I live alone. Fresh fruit and veg aren’t always an option, as they may spoil after a few days of not being used. There are days when I can buy as I need, but going into a supermarket every day gets tiring.
Frozen veg keeps nutrients and also has no waste. Many fruits and veg are seasonal, so continue buying them in season as this works out cheaper.
Prepare meals and freeze them for the week, especially things like stews and soups. We can freeze many sauces and they work out much cheaper by volume than buying the same sauce in a store.
I have learned to make educated choices when I shop. Don’t believe the only healthy food to buy is organic or gluten-free.
Plan before you shop, and you’ll save a ton of money.
Many of us also fall for the marketing gimmicks around products. Even the labels are all part of getting us to stay with the junk foods on the shelves.
Eating healthy long term will work out cheaper for you.
As the prices of beef, fish and other foods rise, we will continue to believe eating healthy is expensive. Let’s not buy into this narrative. There are more than enough healthy alternatives to the more expensive foods out there.
And learn to cook.
You may find you enjoy it and will look forward to preparing your next healthy meal.
Cooking relaxes me.
Try it.
