Is there a cure for obesity?
In my mind, for something to be curable, it must exist as a disease in society. Is obesity a disease?
Many people look at obesity as a disease but we need to differentiate between something which I believe is a mindset battle, rather than a disease.
Can we cure obesity?
Is there a cure for obesity? This a question I am working on and you’ll see my progress toward an answer as the number of posts increases on this blog.
If something is preventable, why do we need the ability to cure it?
We tout prevention as diet and exercise and cure as medication and surgery.
The real cure for obesity is a winning mindset. The battle against obesity lies in our head.
They do not teach us to stuff our faces with unhealthy foods, but we do so because it tastes and feels good. Something my mother said to me as a child came back to me when I started losing weight. She always said if it tastes good, it is bad for you, and if it tastes bad, it is good for you. So I always had a fight against the broccoli and Brussels sprout we had for dinner.
I will not go into the research around obesity. An enormous amount of this research is available to read on the internet, and I did a lot of reading. I am not convinced obesity is a disease which will happen to us, and we need a cure for it. If this is the case, why aren’t we all obese, or is it some of us just don’t live long enough to get to that point?
Is obesity a disease?
There are a host of diseases which have disappeared throughout history. If obesity is a disease, why has it also not disappeared through the ages? Or is obesity something new which no-one expected to have such an impact on society? Did we wake up one morning and there was an outbreak of obesity, or is it something we have created over generations through lifestyle? As technology improves and becomes accessible, we become lazier. How many of us prefer shopping online to walking a kilometer to the store, which we did daily just a few short years ago?
I read something a while ago but don’t remember the exact wording, which sums up my viewpoint on this.
“We spend billions (or trillions) to come up with a cure. Maybe it is time to look at the cause. The cause may be as simple as the food we put on our plates.”
Mindset, and by extension lifestyle, are bigger determinants of obesity than genetics.
